The artist Xiaoshi Vivian Vivian Qin and the curator Hera Chan began their period of residence with the opening of the exhibition "Preparation Park", in Artista X Artista, on May 25. This residence is the result of the collaboration between Artista X Artista and the Times Museum, of Guangzhou, China.
The works presented in "Preparation Park" create a physical and auditory architecture destined to serve as a training ground to prepare for future uncertain sound in the landscapes of Havana and Guangzhou. Historically, loudspeakers in China were connected to trees or poles and citizens gathered to hear the latest news. Now, these same sounds are filtered through loudspeakers in the form of rocks, camouflaged in the landscape, part of the innocuous architecture of the public parks that shape the imagination. Common exercise machines in parks in China now find their way into parks in Havana. They figure as powerful preventive actions, pushed towards a future that lacks clear definition. As Steve Goodman quoted Kodwo Eschun in Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear, speculative power "works through the visualization, management, and delivery of reliable futures." Preparation Park is designed to take advantage of this speculative power in a moment of great sound uncertainty.
