Valentina Ornaghi (Milan, 1986) and Claudio Prestinari (Milan, 1984) studied at the Polytechnic University of Milan, graduating in Industrial Design and Architecture, respectively; and continuing studies at the IUAV, Venice. Since 2009 they work in collaboration.
The need to develop the investigation of their artistic practices in continuous dialogue, and to exchange skills and knowledge, within the context of the workshop, corresponds to their need to work as a collective. The interdisciplinary approach, matured during the years that studied architecture and design, is part of his artistic research, as well as a work method that places the production of this team in a hybrid field where different fields and disciplines interact. His effort to think in terms of unity, does not intend to simplify the complexity of the elements. Just as science by definition separates, classifies, taxonomizes, they try to create coexistence and balance, combining seemingly distant worlds. The object attached to life, the action linked to tools.
They develop different projects at the same time, that arise from spontaneity and chance; and where the unpredictable takes the form of a creative event. These artists are interested in technical processes, from the most traditional to more experimental practices. Through different exercises, they rehearse new technological skills that put their artistic skills to the test. The collective practice focuses on the dualities between thought and action, concepts and manual or craft activity, with special attention to the potential of materials. The action becomes in this case a different way of thinking, action as thought. Art as a laboratory space where ideas grow. An alchemy based on daily research, the sum of simple but necessary actions that, from the project phase to its concretion, require a constant balance between desire and will.
